VIRTUE
Virtue means qualities of moral excellence, goodness, uprightness etc.
According to Sikh philosophy, the main occupation of/for a Sikh is to overcome the five vices (Kaam, Krodh, Lobh, Moh, Hankaar) and live truthful life.
Besides, a Sikh has to inculcate some virtues too, e.g.: contentment, patience, temperance, forgiveness, humbleness, justice, chastity, purity of mind and body, love for everyone, helping the others, honest earning, sharing with others, meditation and sewa etc.
All virtues are Yours, O! God, I have none at all.
Without virtue, there is no devotional worship (Guru Granth Sahib, p.4)
If my friends have virtues, I will share in them.
Let us form a partnership, and share our virtues;
Let us abandon our faults, and walk on the (right) Path.
Let us wear our virtues like silk (precious) clothes;
Let us decorate ourselves, and enter the arena.
Let us speak of goodness, wherever we go and sit;
Let us skim off the Amrit, and drink it in.
One who has a basket of fragrant virtues, should enjoy its fragrance.
(Guru Granth Sahib, p.765-66)
I am embellished with truth, contentment, compassion and faith.
My (spiritual) marriage is fruitful, O! Nanak; I am pleasing to my Lord. (Guru Granth Sahib, p.812)
What is that word (speech), what is that virtue, and what is that mantra (formula)? Which are those clothes, which I can wear to conquer (the heart of) my Husband (the Lord)?
Humility is the word (speech), forgiveness is the virtue, and sweet speech is the mantra. Wear these three robes, O! sister, and you will conquer (the heart of) your Husband Lord.
