Trishnaa

TRISHNAA

Its root is Sanskrit word ‘trishnam’ which means thirst.

This word appears for more than 180 times in Guru Granth Sahib; there, it means thirst, hunger, wish, greed etc. One can have ‘thrishna’ for wealth, power, sexual indugence or anything else.

Trishna is Maya; it is so enchanting that it cannot, usually, be quenched:

The enticing Trishna (desire) for Maya leads people to become emotionally attached to their children, relatives, households and spouses (Guru Granth Sahib, p. 61)

Her Trishna (desire) is never satisfied; she burns and cries out in pain.

O Nanak, without the Name, she is ugly and ungraceful.

(Guru Granth Sahib, p. 89)

He shall have to leave it in the end, and yet his Trishna (desire) is still not satisfied. (Guru Granth Sahib, p. 188)

The thirst of only a few is quenched (Guru Granth Sahib, p. 213)

Their hunger is never satisfied, and they are ruined by duality.

The faces of these slanderers are blackened in the Court of the True Lord. (Guru Granth Sahib, p. 649)

This world is a puppet of clay, Yogi;

the terrible disease, the Trishna (desire) for Maya is in it.

(Guru Granth Sahib, p. 909)

Trishna (desire) is quenched, through the Name of Go

(Guru Granth Sahib, p. 682)
