TEEN TAAP
Literally: ‘three fevers’ that one suffers.
A human being, in his life, can have suffering of three kinds: physical, mental and psychological. These are mentioned as ‘Aadh’ (of mind, i.e. worry, anxiety etc), ‘Biadh’ (of body, i.e. physical) and ‘Upadh’ (psychological; such as doubt, confusion, delusion, illusion etc.).
All these can be overcome by meditation on the Name of God. God is ‘Tinei taap nivaaran-haara’ (Saviour from all the three types of sufferings:
The Lord is the One who removes the three fevers;
He is the Destroyer of pain, the warehouse of peace. (Guru Granth Sahib, p.714)
The Glory of God has spread out everywhere.
The doubts of my mind and body are all erased, and I am rid of the three diseases (Guru Granth Sahib, p.1223)
In the burning heat, a soothing coolness prevails. Happiness ensues and pain departs, O brethren. The fear of birth and death is dispelled, by the perfect Teachings of the Guru. Fear is lifted, and one abides in fearlessness. All evils are dispelled from the mind. He takes us into His embrace as His own. In the Company of the Guruy, chant the Naam, the Name of God. Stability is attained; doubt and wandering cease, O Nanak, listening with one’s ears to the Praises of God, the Lord, the Master. (Guru Granth Sahib, p. 287)
