Mundavani

MUNDAAVANI

‘Mundaavani’, literally: seal or process of sealing. The last hymn of Guru Granth Sahib has been named Mundaavani (the seal). It meant that no alterations could be made and nothing could be added beyond that.

Mundaavani is a composition of Guru Arjan. The gist of the text of Mundaavani is: Truth, contentment, wisdom, along with nectar of God’s Name, is the basis of life. These are must for achieving liberation (self-realization).

In the second part of Mundaavani, Guru Sahib said: God has blessed the human beings with everything but man is not grateful. It is His Grace if He blesses us with meditation of His Name.

Sometimes in the eighteenth century poet Aalam’s composition Madhav Nal and Kam Kandla was added by some scribe in one volume. Ignorant people did not understand the source and the meaning of Rag Maala, hence they began considering this as a part of Guru Gramth Sahib. Raag Maala is, in fact, insult to Guru Granth Sahib.
