MUKTSAR

Muktsar is a town, about 45 km from Faridkot and about 28 km from Jallalabad. Earlier it was known as Khidrana village, and a pond nearby, was known as Khidrane-Di-Dhab. (Dhab literally means a big pond where water is preserved).  Here, on December 29, 1705, 40 Sikhs fought an unequal battle against a huge Mogul army. The Sikhs fought bravely and killed hundreds of the soldiers of the Mogul army. Only Mai Bhago (Mai Bhag Kaur) survived. Guru Gobind Singh, who arrived at the scene soon after the battle, was an eyewitness to the chivalry of the Sikh soldiers. The place was named Muktsar (tank/pool of the 40 Liberated ones), in memory of the martyrdom of the Sikhs. There are several Gurdwaras at Muktsar: Darbar Sahib (the main Gurdwara, inside the town), Tibbi Sahib (where Guru Gobind Singh Sahib rested for some time), Tambu Sahib (where the Sikhs stalled their tents), Shaheed Ganj (where Guru Sahib cremated the Sikhs) etc. The forty martyrs included: Bhai Rai Singh (brother of Bhai Mani Singh), Bhai Mahan Singh and Bhai Sital Singh (sons of Bhai Rai Singh), Bhai Sunder Singh of Jhallian Wala, Bhai Nidhan Singh Waraich (husband of Mai Bhag Kaur), Bhai Bhag Singh and Bhai Dilbagh Singh, both the younger brothers of Mai Bhag Kaur (Mai Bhago), Bhai Gharbara Singh, Bhai Ganda Singh etc.
